It's been a very positive start to the season for Askam United and they've been handed an extra boost this week after being given a substantial grant from the Walney Extension Community Fund.

The Duddon Road side have received £18,000 after a successful application, which they will use to aid their 'Football for All' programme.

As part of this, they have reintroduced junior teams in both boys and girls football, with their under-13 team currently flying in the Barrow & District Junior Football League, as well as support their two senior teams.

The latter has already brought reward this season, with Askam's first team currently third in Division One of the West Lancashire League ahead of tomorrow's match at Wyre Villa, a superb turnaround considering they finished bottom of the table in the previous campaign.

In a statement, the club said the monies from the grant would be solely put into the development of the changing facilities at their ground, greatly benefitting players and match officials alike.

It continued: "We want to provide the best, reliable and safest facilities, accommodating for both men and women, boys and girls - whilst also laying the foundations for our club to meet the criteria to make the next step up.

"We want our club to be multipurpose, we want to open it up to other groups in the community and provide a facility we are proud to share."
