Barrow Raiders rugby director Andy Gaffney is hoping he can bring in at least two more new players for the 2020 season, with the majority of next year’s squad building already complete.

Three new faces have been brought in so far, with the front row the real area of turnover, with Lee Jewitt, Carl Forster and Connor Terrill arriving to replace the likes of Alec Susino, Tom Walker and Glenn Riley.

Chairman Steve Neale admitted in his column in The Mail this week that Barrow ‘seem to have ground to a halt a little with our signings’ with the start pre-season training just two weeks away.

Gaffney, whose hard work has been praised by head coach Paul Crarey, remains determined in bringing some fresh faces into the squad in the weeks ahead, however.

He said: “I think we could do with a couple more new faces, to be honest, maybe three, but I definitely hope to bring in two more new faces and then see what happens after that.

“There’s probably three or four players that I think we still need to sort out and that includes players from last season who we are still negotiating with.”

Gaffney was successful in getting second row Jarrad Stack to sign a new contract this week, with the Australian becoming another player with leadership qualities that will stay on for what Barrow hope is a push for promotion next year.

“We need a lot of leaders on the park next year,” Gaffney said, adding: “We have got some youngsters there as well and we’ll be dual registering some of the amateurs as well.

“We’ve invited ten amateurs down to pre-season training to see how they get on, with a view to signing dual reg forms with some of those.”
