It was a proud day for the Furness Raiders last Sunday, as nine of their players took part in the England Community Lions Youth v Scotland under-19s match at Leigh Miners.

There were four players from the Furness area involved with England in the shape of Dalton trio Jack Stephenson, Evan Jones and Elliott Stockdale, along with Millom's Astin Mossop.

They were up against friends who became enemies for the day, as Barrow Island's Max Anderson-Moore, Askam's Andy McKie, the Millom pair of Dylan Sykes and Charlie Emslie and new Barrow Raiders signing Connor Terrill took to the field for Scotland.

Nine out of the 39 players involved coming from the area certainly vindicates the work Furness Raiders coach David Cairns is doing when it comes to developing young players for potentially greater things.

A dramatic contest ended in a 12-12 draw after a late try from Josh Milne spared England from defeat in a match where Anderson-Moore kicked two goals.

Second row Emslie came close to opening the scoring in Scotland's first attack of the game when he was held up on the line.

But it was England who went ahead after 13 minutes when another Cumbrian, Hensingham's Jack Kellett sold a couple of dummies near to the Scottish line before darting through a gap to score, giving Charlie Heaton an easy conversion.

Emslie was then involved in a dangerous move just before half-time that led to Matty Ferguson being tackled just short of the line, as England retained their 6-0 lead into the break.

Scotland began the second half well and came close again when Lyle Wilson intercepted on halfway, only to be tackled about a metre or so short.

However, the Bravehearts' pressure finally told after 52 minutes when the ball was fed out to Euan Caldwell to score in the corner, with Anderson-Moore converting superbly from the touchline.

Scotland then threatened victory as Anderson-Moore nudged them in front with a penalty from in front of the posts and that lead was extended when a lovely move involving Fergus Simpson, Anderson-Moore and Wilson led to Sean Taylor scoring in the corner.

The conversion was missed and this proved crucial as the Lions equalised in the final minute when Milne just managed to ground the ball over the line and Heaton's goal ensured a draw.
