It was a day to forget for all the local sides flying the flag in the Lancashire Amateur Shield, with all three of the teams who competed bowing out at the second round last Saturday.

Dalton United travelled to a side two divisions above them in the West Lancashire League in Euxton Villa and were on the wrong end of a 7-1 scoreline. Gareth Jones (who else?) scored Dalton’s consolation effort.

Furness Cavaliers also faced higher league opposition in the form of Hesketh Bank and fell to a 2-1 defeat. Cavs fell 1-0 down before a Tom Harris rocket pulled them level.

Hesketh Bank went 2-1 ahead early in the second half as Cavs went down swinging, hitting the post and the bar in the search of an equaliser, but they couldn’t find the net.

Millom bowed out of the competition on the back of a 2-1 home defeat to Atherton Town. Jordan Williams scored for Millom who had chances to at least take the game to a penalty shoot-out but it wasn’t to be.

Vickerstown’s game against Blackpool Wren Rovers at Park Vale was postponed and has been rescheduled for this Saturday.

Haverigg United are out of the Lancashire Amateur Cup after succumbing to a 2-0 defeat to a very good Newburgh Horrock United side.

Holker Old Boys are flying in First Division North of the North West Counties League and they moved up to second in the table following a 2-1 win at Prestwich Heys.

Tom Dawson put Holker 1-0 ahead, but they were pegged back with 20 minutes remaining. Sam Joel then scored what turned out to be the match winner with ten minutes left on the clock, which the visitors saw out to secure maximum points.
