Furness Raiders coach David Cairns insists there are plenty of areas his team can improve on despite them ultimately running out comfortable 42-12 winners against Leeds City College on Wednesday.

Ryan Higgins and Charlie Emslie both scored twice for the Raiders, who shrugged off some early rustiness to come from behind twice in the first half before easing away from the visitors in the second half at Craven Park.

It was their second win in a row in the new AoC Premier Division season and it ended up being one-way traffic after the break as Cairns' side tightened up their game.

Cairns, however, wasn't entirely satisfied with the performance, saying: "We've started every game very similar; we've started where we're poor in the first half, we seem to make mistakes, but once we get on top in a game, we prove we can play a bit of football and score tries.

"It's just we're not quite correcting our mistakes and also we're just not getting into a good field position because we're not completing sets.

"I said to them right from the start 'get through your sets and get into field position and we can play off the back of that.'

"It was a good performance in the end because we scored a lot of points, but they're better than that. It's there, but it needs to be improved."

The first half was a see-saw affair that saw Leeds take the lead twice through Tyler Dargan and Josh Beevers, only for Furness to hit back via tries by Max Anderson-Moore and Elliot Bibby, before Higgins made the most of a knock-on to put the hosts 16-12 at the break.

Higgins then extended the lead two minutes into the second half with a good finish down the left before Sam Purslow dived in after being set up by Bibby to make the scoreline more comfortable.

Furness then added some extra gloss with three tries in the last ten minutes, as Emslie went in under the posts before Rhys Bartlett crashed his way over from a tapped penalty and Emslie rounded things off by burrowing over after a brilliant break through the middle by Harry Gordon.
