ENGLAND ace Ben Stokes, who grew up in Cumbria, is one of four players nominated for the Players’ Player of the Year by the Professional Cricketers’ Association.

Stokes, who this week also heard he was to be made a freeman of the town of Cockermouth, where he attended school and played for the local club, helped England win the World Cup for the first time before starring in the Ashes.

The all rounder, 28, is looking to become the sixth person to win the PCA Players’ Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year, having won the latter in 2013. The winner will be announced in London on Wednesday.

Allerdale councillors voted unanimously this week to bestow the ‘freeman’ honour on the sportsman.

The 28-year-old moved to the area from New Zealand at the age of 12, when his father Ged was appointed head coach of Workington Town Rugby League Club.
