Coniston Casuals have retained their Duddon Tennis League title following an excellent home win over nearest rivals Broughton Square in their last game of the season, making it 11 mixed titles in the club’s history.

Broughton were the early season pace setters, winning their first five matches before a mid-season dip in form saw them haemorrhage points to Ulverston and then Kirkby home and away.

Casuals recovered from their lacklustre start, putting together an impressive run and finally managed to overcome their great rivals by the final week, a role reversal of events in 2017 when Casuals led all season, only to let Broughton in at the death.

The last two seasons have seen Casuals strengthen their squad considerably, with the emergence of Barrow’s very own Steve Bushell along with Zara Johnson from Ulpha, plus the acquisition of local star Pam Clarkson to augment regulars, Jeff Atkinson, Caroline Clutterbuck, Lindsey Bayles and Jane Ritson.

Ulverston enjoyed their most successful season since winning the title in 2004, coming a commendable third, just behind Broughton. Once again Anne Turner and Lee Stagg proved irresistible, while Helen Norrie teamed up with late season signing Andy Dorian.

Finally, Millom’s Scott Barker earned special recognition from his peers as the league’s most improved young player, following his debut for the club last year.
