The Barrow and District Motorcycle Club held their annual Revenge Trial last Sunday near Torver, which counted towards the Northern Centre Championship.

The trial consisted of four laps of 14 sections per lap and Seascale’s Darren Brice proved to be the master on the Hard Course on his Beta, as he narrowly beat Kendal’s Will Brockbank on a Sherco. They tied on marks, but Darren had cleaned more sections.

Kendal’s Rob Shuttleworth again took the honours on the Green Course and with it the valuable points towards the Centre Championship.

There was a close finish on the Clubmans Course too, with just one mark separating the leading duo. It was good to see fast-improving schoolboy Jack Dixon from Grasmere grabbing the third slot.

Results

Hard Course: 1. Darren Brice (Beta, Seascale (most cleans) 13), 2. Will Brockbank (Sherco, Kendal, 13), 3. Richard Gaskell (Beta, Keswick, 17).

Green Course: 1. Rob Shuttleworth (Scorpa, Kendal, 21), 2. Dan Gaskell (Beta, Keswick, 32) 3. Tom Hodgson (Beta, Kendal, 35).

Clubmans Course: 1. Mark Quinn (Beta, Milnthorpe, 40) 2. Anthony Brockbank (Sherco, Kendal, 41), 3. Jack Dixon (Scorpa, Grasmere, 59).

Still on the trials scene, entries for the forthcoming Lakes 2 Day Trial have now closed. Over 200 applications were received leaving many disappointed would be riders as only 180 can be accepted.

Meanwhile, not too far away at Haverigg, the Northern Team Cup Motocross Championship was taking place with teams from northern clubs competing in all the classes against teams from southern clubs.

After two days of hard-fought competition, the Northern team came out on top for the first time.

Askam`s Jamie Keith and Finley Pickering took their usual first and second slots in the 65cc races, Keith again winning all six of his races, but this time riding for the 90 Motocross Club... well done lads.

Results

1. Cumbria Motocross Club (7,622 points), 2. 90 Racing Club (6,972), 3. North East Motocross (6,702), 4. Cumbria Motocross Club B (3,469).

Further south, former champion Wayne Smith from Ulverston (picture by Martin Petts Photography) was having his first ride for over ten years at the Vets Motocross Des Nations meeting at Farleigh Castle, near Bath.

Despite the long lay-off, he won his first race and followed it up with second and fourth placings on his Kawasaki.

Things were looking good in his last race of the day too, until he struck a marker post that had been dislodged by another rider, bringing him down.

Undaunted, he remounted, went after the pack and crossed the line in eighth slot to finish third overall. Still a great result, all things considered.

*The Millom Biker Group hold their annual car and motorcycle show at Thwaites Village Hall Sports Field near Millom on Sunday afternoon.

The show has got bigger and better each year since its concept in 2013 and the committee have again attracted a great selection of vehicles for this year’s show.

Classic and vintage motorcycles will be sharing the show field with Rolls Royces, Bentleys, sports cars, classic saloons, vintage tractors, meaning there’s something for everyone.

A great selection of classic motorcycles are always on display too, alongside modern superbikes.

The club’s master chef Ged will be serving up his delicious burgers and the village hall will be open for tea and snacks etc.

There’s the usual raffle, and ample free parking with all monies going to local charities and the air ambulance services. The Show opens at midday, see you there.

*I’m often asked what MAG actually stands for.

Motorcyclists know it stands for Motorcycle Action Group and was formed many years ago by a group of enthusiasts who were totally dissatisfied by the way motorcyclists were being treated as a poor relation of other road users.

They now have branches all over the country and regularly lobby MPs to get a better deal for motorcycle users in general.

They hold regular rallies to raise revenue to provide a fighting fund to get their views heard in Parliament.

MAG and other clubs raise thousands of pounds for charities and they’re a clean and tidy bunch too - look at the recent ‘Storming the Castle’ rally field.

If you’d like to learn more about the group, pop along to Dalton United Football club on Beckside Road, Dalton at 7pm on Tuesday night for their next Monthly meeting.

*Sad news for speedway supporters, as yet another stadium is closing its gates.

One of the nearest tracks to Furness since the demise of the Workington Speedway, the Stoke Potters home track in Newcastle-under-Lyme is to close at the end of this season and no racing is likely to take place there in 2020 as the stadium has been sold.

The track, which hosts both Speedway and stock car events, has been in existence since the 1940s.

Shocked fans were given the news last weekend after Stoke Potters beat Plymouth Gladiators 54-36.

Over the years, the stadium has been the breeding ground for many young riders who have gone on to become top-class speedway stars.

Our own Rob Shuttleworth from Askam (pictured) had a brief spell there not too long ago before moving up to the legendary Belle Vue Aces.
