Barrow Raiders have made their first new signing for the 2020 season after announcing Millom youngster Connor Terrill will be returning to the club.

Terrill has previously played for Barrow's academy side, the Furness Raiders, and has turned out for St Helens under-19s this year as well as for the Woolybacks in Division Three of the National Conference League.

The 18-year-old prop is one of the young players who have stood out at Devonshire Road this season, with his form there earning him international recognition with Scotland under-19s.

Terrill has turned down the chance to stay with Saints' youth team next season for the opportunity to play first team rugby with the Raiders in Betfred League One.

Rugby director Andy Gaffney said: "Barrow Raiders welcome the signing of Connor Terrill and we'd like to thank Connor's club Millom and head coach Tom Sibley for their continued support and the development of Connor.

"His attitude is second to none and he has played for our national final-winning academy team.

"He has massive potential - as a young prop, he is big and strong and totally dedicated. Connor has been chased by Super League club Saint Helens, but he has chosen to sign for his hometown club where he will be given time to mature and develop."

Terrill's arrival is the latest step towards Barrow head coach Paul Crarey basing his team around young local players in his attempt to earn promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Ryan Johnston made eight appearances in the season just finished, while fellow half-back Jake Carter showed plenty of promise in the second half of the campaign and winger Adam Ford also broke into the side.

Gaffney said: " Connor is the fourth signing we have made from our academy system.

"I would personally like to thank Keith Nutter and Jane Hetherington, the Super Lotto committee and the paying members that help fund the academy and part-fund the signing-on fee.

"It's a fantastic gesture that gives these young players a chance to play for the hometown club."

Terrill is currently sidelined with a broken foot, but is set to recover with plenty of time to spare for pre-season, as Barrow look to bounce back from a difficult year that ended with relegation.
