Following his recent success in the British Crown Green Bowling Association Junior Merit competition, Callum Sharples added the Joe Wardman Trophy to his collection at Salthouse Bowling Club, beating Jack Last in the final, last Sunday.

Sharples, who plays for Red River, Lindal and Walney Park in the various local leagues, saw off home bowler Last 21-10 with what was a dominant performance to continue his memorable summer.

The 12 competitors on the day were split into two groups of six, with each player facing the other five in their group.

In Group One were Sam Naylor, Adam Smith, Holly MacPake, Last, Ben Thompson and Reuben MacPake, while Group Two comprised of Ethan Lowden, Fraser Rigg, Jack Brannon, Daniel Thompson, Will Buckley and Sharples, who was the day’s stand out player, as he won all six of his games to lift the trophy.

He did, however, have a scare against Jack Brannon in the group stage, as he found himself 12-1 and 17-8 behind, before hauling his way back in winning to 19.

Last and Reuben MacPake both won four of their group matches, but the former went into the final by virtue of a slightly better aggregate of 1.24 compared to Reuben’s 1.13.

In the final, Sharples quickly raced into a 9-1 lead, which became 16-7 12 ends later. Last then reached ten before Sharples reached the golden 21 mark with the aid of a single and two doubles.

Joe Wardman commended the 12 players taking part for their effort, before presenting the trophy and prize money to all the competing players.

Wardman would like to thank the Salthouse Bowling Club for the use of the green and the help received from Mike Last and others in running the competition.
