Two tries from captain Jonny Benson helped Windermere upset reigning Cumbria Division One champions Silloth with a 20-13 victory at Dawes Meadow last Saturday.
Silloth opened the scoring against the run of play with a well-worked converted try and they then added a penalty to lead 10-0 before Benson hit back for Windermere before half-time after a good spell of pressure.
The hosts then hit the front in the second half when Bobby Davis beat three men down the wing for an excellent score before Benson's second try and Bertie Hodgson's penalty gave them an unassailable lead that was only eroded by a Silloth penalty.
It was a good day for Millom as well, as they opened their campaign with a hard-fought 12-7 home victory against Workington.
Hawcoat Park A suffered a rough start to their season, however, as they were hammered 76-8 at home to Leigh 3rd XV.
