Ulverston Leisure Centre participated in I Am Team GB Day, dubbed ‘The Nation’s Biggest Sports Day’ last Saturday, giving youngsters a chance to try new sports for free.

The event, inspired by the heroics of Great Britiain’s Olympians was just one of hundreds that took place across the country with less than a year to go before next summer’s Games in Tokyo.

With the idea of getting people in the area more active, the centre began the day with a rounders session, which proved to be very popular among the juniors that turned up.

It then continued with an afternoon of free play involving badminton and table tennis, with all of the events taking places at the Tennis Centre.

Active Communities Coordinator Hannah Paling, who hosted the event, said: "We families come down who don't necessarily come to the weekly meetings I run, so we had some new faces down for the rounders.

"The mums who brought their kids got involved and it ended up being five-a-side, so it went well.

"It's always fun, which helps, and they were down from about 11am until about 2pm, so they had a go at all the different stuff that we had going on, which was also free as well.

"They had a go on bikes and played badminton and netball and some of the kids even joined in the walking netball, which is for ages of 50-plus, but it was a new experience for them and the ladies that came down were impressed with the kids that played."

The Team GB event wasn’t all that occurred during what was a busy weekend at the centre, with them offering each person £1 for one hour’s use of their facilities at their Tennis Centre for badminton, table tennis or mini tennis during Bank Holiday Monday.

Paling said: "I think we may have had a few more down if it wasn't a Bank Holiday weekend because a lot of the people who actually come to my stuff were away - we had stuff like Cartmel Races going on and things like that.

"That was the only thing, but it was still busier than it's been here for quite a few Saturdays, so the main thing was just to get people doing something."
