England's amazing triumph over Australia in the Third Ashes Test wasn't the only cricket match to go right down to the final partnership last Sunday, as Hawcoat Park won the Marsden Cup with a dramatic one-wicket victory against Vickerstown.

On a gloriously sunny day at Furness Park, the minds of some of the spectators may have been focused on the events at Headingley during the afternoon, but they were left gripped by the end of this contest.

Chasing 112, Hawcoat were struggling badly on 24-6 and then 54-8 only for David Thorburn to play the 'Ben Stokes role' with a brilliant 47 batting from number nine to lead his team to an improbable win.

Batting first, Vickerstown lost openers Sam Dixon and Josh Francis to ducks, as they were both dismissed by Park skipper Tom Stanwix.

It didn't get much better for Vickerstown, who were bowled out for just 111, with their captain Gareth Benson top-scoring with 27 and Stanwix claiming 3-16 and Callum Muncaster 3-21 for Hawcoat.

However, the team who are rock bottom of Division One of the Cumbria Cricket League threatened an upset as Benson ripped through Park's top order to leave them 1-4.

George Scott then claimed the wickets of Pete Thompson and Callum Lucas before the fightback began with 25 from Adam Hunter, but when he was caught off Craig Daly, all hope looked lost.

Step up Thorburn, who added 55 for the ninth wicket alongside Stanwix, meaning the final pair needed just three more runs to secure victory.
