Ross Campbell won the first of Hoad Hill Harriers' annual road races, as he crossed the finish line first in the Summer 10k.

Over 200 runners take took to Ulverston's streets on Wednesday and a strong field from the start took off from North Lonsdale Road and headed out toward the coast road on a flat, fast course.

A small group of six soon lead the pace, taking the field of runners out on a quick pace before narrowing down to four at the midway point at the Priory before heading back the way they came.

Gaps started to appear in the field after the five-mile point, as firstly three then two runners from Callum Hanlon and Campbell broke away at the last half-mile mark as they went down the last straight before entering back in the Glaxo playing fields site.

Campbell, of Barrow & Furness Striders, won both 10k events in 2017 and that experience was clear to see as after comfortably sitting on the heels for the last six miles he took the lead with 200m left to win in a comfortable 32:31, his quickest time on the course and third-quickest time overall

Hanlon (Lemington AC) came second in 32.32, while Oliver Gajdowski (Ambleside AC) took third and Jed Bartlett (Bristol & West) and Luke Bowen (Kendal AAC) fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Striders' Bob Atkinson stormed home in 35:06 to take another course record in the MV60 category, and now holds all course records from MV40 to MV60, dating back as far as 1999.

The first female runner home was Lancaster & Morecambe AC's Katherine Cousins in 39:21. Hollie Orr of Black Combe Runners was second in 42:20, Alison King (NAC Isle of Man) took third in 43.31, while Amy Singleton (Walney Wind Cheetahs) and Lucy Varney (Kendal AAC) made up the top five.
