Barrow Raiders will be boosted by the return of Jarrad Stack and Danny Morrow for tomorrow’s trip to Sheffield Eagles, but head coach Paul Crarey’s injury woes go on as Liam Paisley and Jordan Warne take their places on the casualty list.

The relegation trapdoor is creaking under the weight of the Raiders, who now need a sporting miracle to avoid the drop.

Their only hope is that 1895 Cup finalists Widnes lose their three remaining games against Leigh (tomorrow) Swinton and Dewsbury and the Raiders pick up wins at Sheffield and in the final home game against Batley. Barrow’s other remaining game is the trip to Toronto.

“I have never known anything like it,” said Crarey on the injury situation. Every member of his squad has at one time or another been ruled out through injury – several of them for long spells.

With Wembley in mind and their hopes of a play-off place slim, the Eagles are playing their last home game of the season when they go for a hat-trick of wins over Barrow following their narrow victory at Craven Park and their success in the Summer Bash at Blackpool.

The Raiders hope their physical game plan will test Sheffield’s pre-Wembley approach said Crarey, who is well aware of the danger offered from Anthony Thackeray and Pat Walker, as well as wingers Ryan Miller and Ben Blackmore.

“Their half-back pair have been the difference and they have speed in their outside backs with Blackmore always a danger,” Crarey added.

The Barrow boss will leave his final selection until after a fitness check on Tom Walker’s shoulder but if relegation is confirmed by late afternoon tomorrow the Craven Park board will quickly set about rebuilding.

Chairman Steve Neale admitted that, despite progress behind the scenes and in the community the club have not delivered on the field.

He told members at the AGM this week: “Relegation is a temporary blip. We have got to get out of League One at the first attempt and come back stronger.”

The drop would mean a slump in central funding, blowing a big hole in the planned budget but Neale urged the fans to stick together and announced plans for a squad builder fund to finance new players.

Relegation will almost certainly lead to a loss of several of this season’s high performers – Alec Susino is linked to a move to Featherstone - but Neale defended the club’s decision to allow ‘escape clauses’ similar to the one that meant the release of Josh Johnson to Salford.

“If we did not include these clauses we would probably not be able to sign some players. They would not come and we cannot be seen as a club who stifles ambitions,” he told the meeting.

He agreed that the signing of Gareth Hock, who did not play a single game for the club, was a costly mistake but felt that the club was in a stronger position than it was 12 months ago.

Meanwhile fans travelling to the Olympic Legacy Park will be allowed free admission and will be asked for a donation.

The charity cricket match between the supporters trusts from the Raiders and Barrow AFC that was due to take place at Furness Cricket Club yesterday evening had to be postponed due to the incessant rain. A rearranged date of Friday, September 6 has been pencilled in.
