The seventh annual Walney State of Origin takes place at Central Drive tomorrow (1pm kick-off) when holders South of the Island take on the North.

Started in 2013, this is a highly competitive fixture with no prisoners taken as both teams go flat out for bragging rights.

The North were the first winners with the South taking the trophy the following year. The North have been victorious on three occasions in total with one draw and two defeats.

The South look to have the stronger squad on paper with the three Hornby brothers - Damien, Nick and Scott - all coming out of retirement in their squad. Joint coach Dave Bell is also on board, along with former wing star Jason Zaccarine, but Roy Chris Stubbs has pulled out.

The North, coached by Matty Holmes, are down in numbers but could spring a surprise bringing in ringers as the opposition suggests. Jamie Morrow will lead the side, who parade Liam Wright, Ross Cotton and Joe McMullen.

Askam play their third game inside eight days in Division Two of the National Conference League when they take on second-in-the-table Ince Rose Bridge at Fallowfield Park.

Following last Saturday's 34-8 defeat at East Leeds, the Villagers were at Crosfields on Wednesday where they lost 48-6. They took a 6-0 lead only to trail 14-6 at the break and they lost Jack Cairns with a dislocated elbow.

Kris Tyson has departed to join brother Mark at Egremont and Brad Kavanagh is unavailable.

Stand-in coach Tammy Tyson said: “I missed the Crosfields game but heard they did OK, so they were at the ground last night where several were having treatment for slight knocks.

"It's been a hard few weeks but we have got teams out on the pitch when all was against us in what has been a trying year.”

In the North West Men's League, Ulverston are home to Latchford Albion in Division One and go without Jack Akrigg, Kurt Shields and Matty Storey. Marc Dixon could return following a groin strain along with promising teenager Scott Askew.

Roose Pioneers are at Crosfield A where they look to climb the table and force a play-off place in Division Three. Mal Kenny, Liam Armistead, Euan James and Josh Tranter return while Lewis Sayle and Matty Phillips miss out.
