A packed summer holiday of children’s activities at Ulverston Leisure Centre continued with a dedicated tennis camp at their indoor courts last Friday.

The centre help kids to develop their racket skills during almost every school holiday, but this was slightly different as classes for different age groups were set up for kids of varying levels of experience.

The day began with a session for those aged 5-7, essentially for juniors who’ve only just taken up the sport with dreams of becoming the next Novak Djokovic or Simona Halep.

It then continued with an hour for kids aged eight and above and looking to bring on their game and learn new tricks, with numbers in both groups kept to a low number so they could be properly coached.

Active communities coordinator Hannah Paling said: “I think it suits the older players a little bit better.

“We don’t ever need 20 kids in for the tennis because they need to work on certain things and sometimes, even if you’ve got four, they can still do a lot of stuff, whereas in football you need about ten so you can do five-a-side.

“We never expect massive numbers and when we run our sessions we kind of cap it at eight anyway and that suits us fine.”

The centre’s junior summer activities sprung into action with a gymnastics camp last month and there have been sessions for football, as well as the return of the popular multi-sport and dance camps that they have held before.

There’s still plenty to fit in before everyone returns to school, with plenty more multi-sport activity days coming up, while Ulverston will be part of the ‘I Am Team GB’ initiative on August 24 with the tennis centre giving kids the chance to play rounders, table tennis and badminton for free.

Paling said: “That’s something we’ve been asked to put on and I’ll be putting on some rounders at 11am because we have a good turn-out for rounders - we have a good following for it on Thursday nights.

“It also give them a chance to have a few badminton matches, some table tennis and some walking netball because we’ve got a good following for that as well, so the idea is to get people active.”
