Barrow Raiders began their summer rugby camps this week, giving kids of varying experience to develop their skills during the school holidays.

The camp proved to be very popular during its first few days with over 50 children taking to the pitch at the Raiders’ Craven Park ground.

The camp has been split into three groups: the first of which is the ‘future pro rugby’ camp , which is recommended for kids aged 9-14 who have a bit of experience of playing rugby league.

There’s another rugby group for kids slightly younger or just starting out in the game, with both being put through their paces by Barrow players Stargroth Amean, Wartovo Puara and Paul Séguier. Finally, there’s a ‘future Raiders multi-sports camp’ that is for children aged 5-9 and will also take them through football and cricket sessions over the course of the camp’s three weeks.

Raiders community liaison officer Siona Hartley said: “We also have a Barrow Raiders Sports Leadership programme running and today we have three key stage 4 students who are down from Millom, Furness Academy and Walney School.

“They are helping us coach and I’m giving them guidance on how to be a good sports leader and they can use the hours that they build up with us to go towards their sports leadership accreditation.

“We’ve actually got nine sports leaders coming throughout the three weeks, so that’s a big part of what I want to launch.

“We’ve got children here up from the age of five to 14-year-olds, with more boys than girls. I would like more girls, so that is still a big focus for us.”

The club’s Raiders on the Road programme has recently visited Askam and Millom and is looking to rearrange events at Barrow Island and the Vulcan Estate they had to cancel.
