Barrow’s Ryan Shaw was involved in an absolute barn-stormer last Sunday, as he helped Super League strugglers Hull Kingston Rovers to a fantastic 27-26 victory against Castleford Tigers.

Shaw, who kicked five goals, wasn’t the only player from the area involved at the other Craven Park, as Askam’s Jacques O’Neill and Haverthwaite’s Will Maher were both interchanges for the Tigers.

Tries from Craig Hall and Adam Quinlan put Hull KR into a 12-0 lead, but Castleford stormed back with 26 answered points with Pete Mata’utia, Jordan Rankin, Craig Minikin and James Clare (an eight-point penalty try) all crossing the whitewash.

Back came the Robins in the final 20 minutes, however as they levelled the match through two tries from Ben Crooks before veteran Danny Maguire snatched victory with a golden-point drop goal in extra time.

Hull KR coach Tony Smith said: “He [Maguire] is a bit like Steve Smith in that champions shine every now and then. Top-class sportsmen step up in those moments when the rest of us struggle in those pressured situations.”

The win took the Robins level on 18 points with Leeds, Wakefield and Huddersfield in the tightest fight against relegation in years.

Leeds Rhinos, with Barrovian Brad Singleton among the interchanges, bolstered their survival hopes with a thumping 44-0 away win at rivals Huddersfield.

The Rhinos ran in eight tries at the John Smith’s Stadium with Konrad Hurrell and Ash Handley both scoring twice.

London Broncos are now two points adrift at the bottom after they were thrashed 58-28 at home to Salford Red Devils, for whom Niall Evalds scored a hat-trick.

Urswick’s Greg Richards and former Raider Josh Johnson were on the benches for the respective teams.
