Askam’s table tennis star Emily Bolton helped England to a team silver medal at the Commonwealth Championships in India.

The 21-year-old, competing alongside Tin-Tin Ho and Denise Payet in the team event, helped England reach the final with victories over Nigeria, Bangladesh, Australia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and, in the semi-finals, Nigeria again.

They met hosts India, the strongest team in the competition, in the final and Ho suffered her first defeat of the competition as she went down 3-1 to Archana Kamath in the opening tie.

Payet then lost 3-0 to Commonwealth Games 2018 gold medallist Manika Batra and Bolton’s 3-0 defeat by Madhurika Patkar completed a 3-0 scoreline as India took the gold.

In the women’s singles, Bolton went out in the group stage, while in the mixed doubles, Bolton & David McBeath were beaten 3-0 in the last 32 by Bode Abiodun & Offiong Edem of Nigeria.

In the women’s doubles, Bolton competed alongside Eunice Zoe Lim of Singapore and the pair went down 3-1 to Australia’s Melissa Tapper & Michelle Bromley in the last 16.
