Former Barrow batsman Sam Dutton struck a fine 82 for Cumberland on the first day of their Minor Counties Championship match against Norfolk at Furness.

Dutton was part of a solid effort from Cumberland’s middle order as his knock, along with 51 from captain Michael Slack and 63 from South African veteran Jacques du Toit to help the home side recover from 72-3 before eventually declaring on 303-9.

Ryan Findlay was the pick of Norfolk’s bowlers, as the left-arm spinner took 4-83, while Brett Stolworthy and Ashley Watson both chipped in with two wickets.

Norfolk struggled in reply during the evening session, as Sam Athurton (10) was trapped lbw by Gareth Wade before Matthew Plater (16) and Tom New (5) were both dismissed to leave the visitors 80-3 at the close.
