Ken Howarth and John Taylor edged a tense final to claim the Mike Elliott Memorial Trophy in winning the Barrow Island Over 60s Open Pairs competition earlier this month.

Howarth and Taylor played well all day on a very challenging green on July 5, and were only tested in their quarter final and semi-final, where they beat Glenis McDonald and Alan Mason 21-20.

Runners-up Tom Elliott and Frank McKechnie also eased through to the semi-final where they defeated Dave and Barbara Dent 21-18.

In the final, Howarth and Taylor cruised to a 15-6 lead before Elliott and McKechnie started to claw back the deficit. However, Howarth produced some wonderful leads and with Taylor backing him up, they eventually won 21-16.

The club would like to thank all those that helped throughout the 13-hour long day, especially Peter, Mick, John and Christine for their hard work in the kitchen and on the barbecue.

Special thanks go to our sponsors Michelle, Pauline and Michael Elliott and The Robin Hood.

The raffle raised £125, which was matched by the club and a cheque for £250 was donated to Barrow Island Community Primary School and presented to deputy head Victoria Evans to help towards their fundraising for Bobby’s Bus.

All members of Barrow Island Bowling Club would like to pass on their best wishes to Keith Wilson, as he continues his recovery.
