Manager Ian Evatt will be looking for another centre-back after revealing after Barrow AFC's 3-1 victory over Workington that Brian Wilson has left the club.

Wilson struggled with injuries during his year with the Bluebirds, with a succession of calf problems limiting him to just ten appearances last season – the last of those came on Boxing Day.

The 36-year-old was given the chance to earn a new contract at Holker Street this summer and played in their opening pre-season friendly against Blackburn Rovers last week.

However, he suffered another injury setback in that game after coming on as a second-half substitute and Evatt has now decided to look elsewhere, with Sheffield United’s Sam Graham featuring as a trialist against the Reds.

While Wilson has left, striker Rhys Turner, another who has struggled with muscle strains, is still training with Barrow and was part of their warm-up before kick-off.

Evatt said: “Brian has left the club now. After the injury [against Blackburn], we felt it was time to part ways.

“Rhys is still going away on the backburner and he’s getting better and better every day.

“Obviously, we need to see him play games and stay 100 per cent fit for a period of time, but he’s a player that I really like.

“He’s got a hell of a lot of ability has Rhys, and hopefully we can get him back in one piece and keep him in one piece because if we can, he’d be one of the better players in the National League.”

On whether his team had given him the reaction from Tuesday’s defeat against Furness Select, Evatt added: “Workington gave us a tough game and it was just one of those things where we went through the gears in the second half.

“It’s another step forward and some more minutes in the legs and once we get a few injured players back, we’ll be much stronger.”
