Askam are all out to make amends for last week’s 60-6 home defeat at the hands of West Bowling when they go into a local derby clash with Barrow Island at Fallowfield Park tomorrow.

The Villagers lie at the foot of National Conference League Division Two with just one win from 11 outings while the boys from Rating Lane are on a high in third place following their emphatic 32-6 win over St Judes.

The going gets tough for Askam after losing so many top liners during this campaign and it won’t get any easier with a trip to Beverley next weekend.

A young and inexperienced side came up against second-placed West Bowling last week and despite a valiant fight, they were never in the contest.

Bolstering the forwards this week are Tom Hopkins long with Tom Askew and Brad Kavanagh, while expected to start after coming through last week is Joe Satterthwaite, who had been sidelined for a lengthy period with a shoulder injury.

Missing out though are Kris Tyson, Gary Bolton, Jack Cairns and Keir Shepherd. Stand-in coach and club stalwart Tammy Tyson said ahead of the game: “We are up against it but will have a stronger side out this week.

“I can’t praise the young lads enough, lads like the Steel brothers, Zac, Todd and Josh, who played out of their skins along with Keir Shepherd who was outstanding.”

Tyson has been holding the fort along with Dean Marwood, who will be plotting his former club’s downfall.

“Dean has been brilliant with the lads,” added Tyson. “He is in there keeping their spirits up and motivating them. We will give it our best shot and we are all looking forward to the game.”

It will be a quick return to Fallowfield Park for Adam Jackson, who could face another Jackson in cousin Brad. Both are prolific goal kickers and organise their respective teams.

“We will not underestimate them despite them going through a difficult time. We came unstuck against Ulverston in the Barton Townley Cup so we will take them seriously.” said Island coach Joe Elliott.

“It is a tough league and we are in a good position (third) going for promotion with leaders Rose Bridge and second West Bowling to come to Rating Lane.

“We can’t afford any slip ups and must make sure we get a result tomorrow against what will be a determined Askam side.”

Dan White, Joe Mallinson and Matt Parkinson are unavailable while Ryan Clegg is rated 50-50 as he has a hamstring problem. Back in the fold is young Matty Brown while Elliott is looking to bring in two or three ‘A’ team players.
