The Bootle Scrambles Club held their latest Multiclass Trial on the Fell Green courses near Bootle recently.

Four routes had been laid out by the hard working organisers, The Hard, The Green, the Clubmans, and a Beginners.

The weather was again kind to the Bootle club and competitors enjoyed a good day’s riding without the usual downpours.

Millom’s Craig Seward proved master on the Hard course on his Scorpa, winning with a 15-point margin from Kendal’s Tom Hodgson who rode a Beta.

Close competition on the Green route saw Barrow’s Mark Instance (Gas Gas) take the win by just one mark from Keswick’s Stuart Gaskell, also riding a Beta.

Another close tussle for second on the Clubmans Route resulted in a tie between Jeremy Hackett from Carnforth and Tony Brockbank from Kendal, both riders losing a mere nine marks each.

Hackett was awarded the second place having ‘cleaned’ just two more sections than Brockbank. Both riders used Sherco machines.

Only one finisher on the Beginners course saw Keswick schoolboy Lewis Gaskell take the win there.

As always, the club would like to thank all the officials observers and landowners etc who gave up their time to make the event possible.

This Sunday, the Trials scene moves to Torver, in and around the woodland near the old railway line.

Stalwarts of the long-established Barrow and District Motorcycle Club have again laid out three courses for competitors to choose from, The Hard, The Green, and The Clubmans. First man is due away at 11am.

Still on the subject of ‘off-road’ motorcycle sport, I see the in the latest standings of the Cumbria Motocross Championships on the Route 44 track at Haverigg things are hotting up amongst local riders who are well up in the series.

Barrow’s DeeJay Walker leads the A class with Taylor Smith not too far astern in second place.

Askam’s Ben Southward is runner-up in his class with Barrow’s Jamie Leake in third, and the other member of ‘team Southward’, Gavin, is running second in his class too.

There should be some good racing there at the next round in a couple of weeks’ time on June 15 and 16. Might just pop along to that one.

*My belated congratulations to Barrow’s Danny Shaw, who had the commentators getting excited at the latest Ducati Tri Options Cup round at Donnington.

The championship is run alongside the televised prestigious BSB series. Torrential rain made racing difficult, but Danny carved his way to the front on the big Ducati.

Viewers saw him miraculously recover from two heart-stopping slides, which commentator Jamie Whitham thought would bring the Barrow rider to grief.

Despite these, he bravely hung on to take a well-earned second place on the rostrum.

He`d like to thank his local sponsors Freelance Mechanics, Graphix Signs, Furness Fluid Power, Prestige Cars, Emlyn Street Tyres and many others for their support, and is now looking forward to Brands Hatch from June 14-16.

*Most armchair TT fans will already know the weather has played havoc with this year’s programme, so the previous schedules I gave are out of the window.

ITV4 are screening revised coverage tonight and tomorrow at 9pm. If you did miss all the action this week, no problem as next Wednesday they are screening a full review of the week’s racing with all the usual on-board camera footage and post-race interviews.

The following evening (June 13) is the TT Review part two. I’m sad to report one rider has already given his life to the sport this year. Daley Matheson, an experienced competitor from Stockton, suffered fatal injuries following an incident near Bradden Bridge on Monday.

*Hot on the heels of the recently formed branch of the Vintage Motorcycle Club, enthusiast Mark Newsome is interested to know if there are enough Velocette owners in the South Lakes area who would be interested in forming a local branch of the Velocette Owners Club.

At the moment, owners of this classic British motorcycle have to head off to mid-Lancashire to attend group meetings and ride outs etc.

Mark, who runs a successful motorcycle restoration business here in Furness, has rapidly established himself as one of the country’s top Velocette gurus.
