Barrow AFC will not be heading back to Gateshead in the 2019/20 season, after the financially-stricken Tynesiders were denied a licence to compete in the National League.

Almost a month after their campaign finished, the Bluebirds have actually gone up a place to tenth after the Heed were also deducted nine points as part of the punishments meted out.

Gateshead, who currently, don’t even have a ground, had been charged by the league with multiple breaches of its membership rules and this latest setback comes at the end of a week that saw a takeover headed by the club’s fans apparently completed.

However, owner Dr Ranjan Varghese was bizarrely reinstated on its Companies House file, meaning the Heed’s future looks more uncertain than ever.

Their fate looks likely to mean a reprieve from relegation for Aldershot Town, who finished fourth from bottom in the National League table last season.
