Former Barrow Island forward Morgan Knowles was involved in an absolute thriller last Friday as St Helens secured a last-gasp 32-30 victory over Salford Red Devils in what was his 100th appearance for the club.

Saints raced into a 16-0 lead inside 12 minutes at Langtree Park through tries from Lachlan Coote (2) and Tommy Makinson, but Salford then threatened to produce one of the upsets of the season.

The Red Devils haven’t won a fixture in St Helens since 1980, but 30 unanswered points left them 30-16 ahead against the Super League leaders going into the final 15 minutes.

From there, St Helens showed why they are now six points clear at the top, as Coote completed his hat-trick before Makinson and James Bentley both struck to level the match, with Coote adding the goal for the final try to snatch victory.

Saints coach Justin Holbrook said: “I am happy to win that one. What an entertaining game of rugby league. Massive credit to the players to storm back in the way they did.”

Former Raider Joe Bullock was among the interchanges, as Wigan Warriors took on Catalans Dragons at the iconic Camp Nou in Barcelona last Saturday.

In front of a record regular season crowd of 31,355, the Dragons pulled clear from an 8-6 half-time lead, as two tries from David Mead and further scores from Samisoni Langi and Sam Kasiano guided them to a 33-16 victory.

Brad Singleton returned to action for Leeds Rhinos last Thursday, but he couldn’t stop them from slumping to a 30-8 defeat against Castleford Tigers at Headingley.

Jesse Sene-Lafao scored two of Castleford’s five tries in a match Askam’s Jacques O’Neill had to sit out with a head injury.

Barrovian Ryan Shaw fell to a 30-22 defeat at Huddersfield Giants with Hull Kingston Rovers, who led 16-8 at half-time at the John Smith’s Stadium. Shaw eventually kicked three goals in the match.

Urswick’s Greg Richards was one of the interchanges for London Broncos, who edged a thriller against Wakefield Trinity 42-34, in which Jordan Abdull scored four tries, including a first-half hat-trick.

Askam product Tom Walker was involved in the final match in last weekend’s Summer Bash in Blackpool, as Widnes Vikings were defeated 36-22 by Leigh Centurions.
