BEN Garner was back to his best after keyhole surgery on his knee as he ran in two brilliant tries to help Barrow Island to a 46- 18 win over Shaw Cross at Rating Lane in National Conference League Division Two.

Island led 18-12 at half time, but the home side stepped up a gear to run in a further 28 points without reply until a late Cross touchdown.

The hosts applied the early pressure, with Adam Jackson held up and the impressive Dan White hauled down inches short.

However, a Jackson kick through saw Cameron Currie pounce to score out wide, with Jackson converting.

Cross came back strong with props Luke Hudson and Mark Smith both going close and they levelled on 17 minutes. Sam Jones knocked on clearing his line and, from the scrum, swift play enabled Smith to crash over with Callum Barker adding the goal.

Island then went behind when scrum half Owen Lumb burst through to score from 30 yards for another converted try.

But the hosts added 12 points as half time approached. Josh Banham broke in midfield and racing in to score was Jake Stockdale, and on the stroke of half time Ian Irvine's well-timed ball sent White over, with Jackson adding both goals.

Six minutes after the restart, a neat ball from Jackson sent Garner racing clear for another converted try – and Jackson was once more the provider as he linked with Peter Rimmer and pulling clear of the cover was Garner to touch down for a converted try.

The home side increased their lead when Stockdale raced clear to score, followed by Jones racing in from 35 yards, with Jackson tagging on the extras..

Brandon Corrie lost the ball close to the Cross line and sweeping up was Barker to outstrip the cover in a 85 yard dash, for a try he converted. Corrie then made amends, taking Jackson's long pass and sending Currie in at the corner.
