RYAN Johnston and Jake Carter earned praise from Paul Crarey for stepping up to the mark in Barrow Raiders' 50-0 defeat to Toulouse Olympique last Saturday.

Johnston was given his third start of the year in France, with Jamie Dallimore rested, while half-back partner Carter made his Betfred Championship debut off the interchange bench.

Raiders head coach Crarey was pleased with how both acquitted themselves.

"We didn't play Glenn Riley or Dallimore as we wanted to save them and, credit to players like Ryan Johnston and Jake Carter out of our academy," said Crarey.

"It's his (Johnston's) second game for the first team against a full-time side, and I thought he did really well when he was put under pressure and put in some good kicks.

"It's our job to farm our young players because we have no dual-registration."

This Sunday's visitors Swinton Lions are one of the clubs who utilise the dual-registration system, but even with Barrow's injury problems Crarey is determined to steer clear of it.

"We don't want dual-registration, so we are relying on our players plus loanees and it's difficult to get players to come to the area to play because of our location in the country," said Crarey.

"But we're happy; it's not a disaster when you see how Toronto got spanked and they had a full compliment of players."
