Georgia Stanway came off the bench as England women won the SheBelieves Cup for the first time after defeating Japan 3-0 on Tuesday night.

The game was effectively wrapped up by the time former Dowdales School pupil Stanway replaced the injured Izzy Christiansen after 39 minutes of the match, which was held in Tampa, Florida.

But the Barrow-born Manchester City forward helped the Lionesses comfortably see out the contest and pick up their first piece of silverware under manager Phil Neville.

England, who had previously beaten Brazil and drawn with USA in the tournament, flew out of the traps against opponents they will also face in the group stage of this summer’s Women’s World Cup.

They led after 12 minutes when Lucy Staniforth was allowed to advance towards the Japanese penalty area before firing into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

The lead was doubled at the midway point of the first half when Karen Carney had the simple task of heading in Jodie Taylor’s perfectly-flighted cross from the right.

And it was effectively game over after just half an hour, as Beth Mead, found by a great ball from Keira Walsh, was allowed to turn by some hesitant defending before squeezing a shot in at the near post.
