ROOSE Pioneers under-15s began life in the North West Youth League in the perfect manner as they won their opening match of the 2019 season at home to Belle Vue Bees.

Pioneers and Askam have both taken the decision to join the North West competition for this year and kicked off their respective campaigns.

Placed in Division Three, Roose were involved in a thrilling contest with Belle Vue and eventually emerged 28-24 victors over the visitors in the encounter at Holebeck to start the season with two points on the board.

Askam are playing in Division Two and already had one competitive game under their belts after losing to Walney Central’s team from the age group above in the BARLA Under-16 National Cup.

They travelled to Rochdale Mayfield for their first game in the North West Youth League and were edged out 22-16 by the hosts.

Roose will be aiming to continue their winning start to the season when they play their first away game this Sunday, making the trip to face Ashton Bears Gold, who were not in action last weekend.

Meanwhile, Askam welcome Ashton Bears Black in Division Two, seeking to chalk up their maiden victory against a team who defeated Latchford Giants 26-12 in their opening game.

The Barrow & District League does not get under way until later in March, although there are plenty of friendly matches taking place as teams warm up for the campaign.

Several teams have BARLA National Cup matches coming up this Sunday as well, with Walney’s under-16s making the long journey to play Wakefield Hawks in the second round.

The under-14s knockout competition sees Askam hosting Saddleworth in the second round on a big day of rugby at Fallowfield Park.
