Ulverston Leisure Centre’s half-term activities were brought to a close by a day dedicated to football last Friday, which was open to boys and girls of all ages.

Over the course of the whole week, the camp was the most well-attended the centre has run, with the kids previously playing sports such as cricket and dodgeball in the sunshine, while also swimming indoors.

For some, knowing they’d have a day playing football was the highlight of the week, with there being plenty of smiles on faces of the 25 children from the age of five and upwards that took part.

There was the added bonus that those who had been attending the camp all week had already made new friends by the time they could play their favourite sport.

Ulverston Leisure Centre active communities coordinator Helen Paling said: “It was probably the best numbers we’ve had for a football camp, with a mixture of ages.

“I think we had three girls involved, but they all seemed to enjoy it and I think a couple of them had been to the other days during the week, so they’d already been down.

“They knew that on the Friday they’d just be playing football, but they seemed to be happy with that.”

Paling and the centre’s staff enjoyed introducing the kids to sports they hadn’t necessarily played before, while the pleasant weather allowed most of the sessions to take place outdoors.

Those who enjoyed them won’t have to wait too long if they want more, with the centre set to run more activities during the Easter holiday.

Paling said: “It’s not finalised yet, but we will be running activity days, including football, and we will also be running dance camps over Easter.

“We’re just looking at getting that sorted now – it will be on our website and Facebook as soon as we’ve done that – and we’ve got two weeks over Easter, so there’s probably going to be something on every day.”
