Hawcoat Park A were knocked out of the Robinsons Brewery Shield last Saturday, as they were edged out 25-22 by Preston Grasshoppers 4th XV in the quarter finals.

The Maroon and Whites put 60 points on the Grasshoppers the last time they met in the league last November, but this was a much closer encounter between two sides battling for a place in the last four.

Going into the closing stages, it looked as if that that would be going to the visitors, who had warmed up for the tie by thrashing Clitheroe 2nd XV the previous week.

But they were denied at the death, as Preston scored a last-gasp try to break their visitors’ hearts and avenge that autumn shellacking.

The only Cumbria League match involving one of our teams last weekend was not one that Millom will want to dwell on, as they were hammered 78-10 at Division Two leaders Silloth.

Millom’s hosts have won every one of their league fixtures this season and look destined for promotion, while the result never looked in doubt as Silloth piled on the points.

There is a full round of fixtures this weekend, as Hawcoat Park return to action in Division 1B at home to St Benedicts, as they look to put their 66-7 thrashing against Whitehaven from two weeks ago behind them.

In Division Two, Furness are the latest team to try and stop the Silloth juggernaut, as they host the seemingly unstoppable leaders at the Strawberry Grounds.

Millom will have the week to lick their wounds before facing bottom side Wigton Wanderers at home, while Windermere will resume their campaign on the road at Workington.
