PAUL Crarey wants Barrow Raiders to show more composure under pressure, starting when Dewsbury Rams visit in the Betfred Championship this Sunday.

After an impressive start to the 2019 season away to Batley Bulldogs, the Raiders have suffered back-to-back losses and were beaten 56-0 at York City Knights last weekend.

One area the head coach is likely to have focussed on in training this week is speed around the ruck in both attack and defence, where Crarey believes Barrow have struggled at pressure points during games.

“It’s not that we’re not trying – we were at 88 per cent completion so the quality of the play is there – but we’re looking a little bit clunky and disorganised from 20 metres out, and defensively we’re getting beaten around the rucks,” said Crarey.

“Our play-the-balls were slow off their goal-line, we wanted wins and quick rucks, but we didn’t get them so we’ve got to fix all that up for Dewsbury.

“We see all that and we’re thinking these aren’t the plays we run at training, but under pressure your brain does different things.

“It’s about them trying to play under pressure and sticking to process, but at the moment we’re off and a little bit inconsistent in what we do.”

Dewsbury head to Craven Park having picked up their first win under new head coach Lee Greenwood last Sunday, defeating Swinton Lions 38-24.

And Crarey is looking firmly ahead rather than dwelling too much on previous games.

“From the Batley game we were great and the previous week when we pushed Sheffield all the way, to go to York and put in a performance like that, I didn’t expect to happen,” said Crarey.

“We’ll work it out and prepare for Dewsbury, but we’ve got to forget about it and move on, because there will be some heavy defeats in this division and some tight wins because that’s the nature of a part-time team.”
