ETHAN Kelly’s impressive displays for Millom have earned him a month-long trial with Betfred League One side Whitehaven.

The prop, who spent several months training with Barrow Raiders and played in pre-season matches for them in 2017, made his bow for the West Cumbrians in Sunday’s friendly win over Newcastle Thunder.

Haven head coach Gary Charlton was impressed by what he saw from Kelly both in their Challenge Cup tie with Red Star Belgrade last month and at training last Thursday.

And Charlton praised him for his performance in the 46-12 win over a young Newcastle side as well.

“We were aware of Ethan’s potential and he was man of the match in the Challenge Cup tie with Red Star Belgrade which was shown by the BBC online,” said Charlton.

“He fitted in really well with the lads, and what he did in tackling and taking the ball in against Newcastle was good.

“He will train with us for a month and see how he develops, but he looks to have a bit of potential in him.”

Kelly is the latest amateur player from this area to earn an opportunity at the Recreation Ground under Charlton, with Askam pair Tom Wilkinson and Sam Dowsett having signed professional contracts with the club for 2019.

Whitehaven kick off the League One season at home to Keighley Cougars this Sunday.
