SHEA Whelan was the star man for Barrow Thorns with 38 points, but their depleted side was unable to overcome Stockport Falcons in the National Basketball League Under-18 Men North West division.
Thorns were aiming to gain there first win of the new year against a Falcons team which had bested them earlier in the season and returning for the under-18s was Henry Truman, following a stint with the Barrow senior team
The game at Hoops started well for the Thorns as they kept pace throughout the first quarter, and Whelan and Abe Brown led the way offensively, providing most of the scoring.
Meanwhile, a solid team zone defence limited Stockport’s opportunities to find a lead and the quarter ended 19-18 to the Thorns.
The second quarter began much like the first, with neither team being able to stretch out much of an advantage. Whelan and Truman provided most of the points for the home side in this period, with both of them getting to the free throw line multiple times.
However, as the quarter rolled on, tiredness began to catch up to the Thorns, with Joe Carroll picking up his third and fourth fouls in quick succession, This hurt the teams defence and allowed the Falcons to pull away to a 48-38 lead to end the half.
Following a much-needed half-time rest, Barrow attempted to claw back the lead Stockport had built.
Whelan and Truman continued to lead Barrows offence, with Patrick McCormack and Max Sharpe also contributing to the attacking effort.
Unfortunately, visitors Stockport remained resilient and kept their lead, and the Thorns took a major blow with Truman picking up his fifth foul meaning he had to exit the Game. The quarter ended with the score 67-55 to the Falcons
In the final period, Stockport consolidated their lead, limiting the Thorns scoring opportunities and going on to be eventual 84-66 winners.
Foul Troubles hurt the Thorns chances, but they fought well considering they were lacking some key contributors.
The Thorns are now sixth in the North West standings and are back in National Basketball League action this Sunday when they travel to second-bottom side Preston Pride looking to get back to winning ways.
