JOE Bullock earned praise from Adrian Lam for his debut display despite Wigan Warriors suffering a 22-12 defeat to St Helens in their Super League opener on Thursday evening.

Bullock was making his Super League bow for the club in the season-opening derby clash after completing the move from Barrow Raiders in the off-season.

The prop came off the interchange bench midway through the first half and drew plenty of plaudits for his performance in the loss at the Totally Wicked Stadium – including Wigan head coach Lam, who was delighted with how both Bullock and fellow debutant Zak Hardaker played.

“There’s heaps to encourage me from particular points in the match,” said Lam.

“Individual performances were the highlight for me; I think Joe Bullock was sensational. I’m excited to see his progress this season.

“And also Zak (Hardaker), just to get through the game, I’m really happy. He’s only played one trial game, and that’s nothing compared to a Super League game versus St Helens.”

The defeat followed the news Wigan had been deducted two points for salary cap breaches, but Lam did not feel that had an effect on the squad.

“We talked about it but I don’t think it would have played a role,” he said. “The timing from the club perspective is not good, but I don’t think it had an effect on the result.”
