PAUL Crarey is ready to unleash Barrow Raiders’ Papua New Guinean signings against Whitehaven after being impressed with them in training.

Stargroth Amean, Wartovo Puara Jr and Willie Minoga have spent their first week in this country getting up to speed with the Raiders and adjusting their new surroundings, along with the cold weather.

Barrow head coach Crarey has cautioned the club’s fans not to expect too much too soon from them, but is pleased to see they have settled in well and already shown plenty of good signs.

“The three PNG boys have brought plenty of flair to training,” said Crarey. “I’m really impressed with their attitude and everything else, so we’re looking forward to letting them go and we’re going to play them.

“But the Barrow public have got to give them time. They’re feeling the cold and it’s their first run-out for us. They don’t know the plays, so to speak, but they pick up things really quickly and you can tell they’ve come from a great rugby league environment.

“They’re really enjoying it here and the public and the board have been brilliant, and taken to them and made them feel welcome.

“They like being here and that’s a massive thing because they’ve left their families back home to come to try to earn some money for them, and try to progress in British rugby league.”

There are some familiar faces set to return for Whitehaven’s visit to Craven Park tomorrow too, with skipper Martin Aspinwall fit again and Tom Loxam available.

The Raiders are aiming to put in an improved display after last week’s 24-10 loss to Oldham and Crarey expects an intense Cumbrian derby.

“Whitehaven and Barrow games are always close, home and away, and they’ll come with a purpose,” said Crarey.

“They got beaten at Workington, but I watched that game and there was nothing in it for large parts. It was probably just experience, but they’re missing a few players as well.”
