PROMISING pugilists from Furness Catholic and Barrow ABC will be making their way to the Cumbria Grand Hotel in Grange-over-Sands tomorrow night for the annual dinner show organised by the Furness & South Lakeland Freemasons.

This will be the 33rd edition of the sold-out event, which sees amateur boxers from a variety of clubs – including both Barrow gyms – battling it out for honours.

The matches will not be confirmed until the evening, but Barrow pair Euan Turner and Lewis Smith have already been confirmed by the Brook Street gym’s coach Jeff Moses as being set to fight on the card.

“Team Ryan at Furness ABC and Jeff Moses, of Barrow ABC, have proved dependable supporters of the event and always endeavour to have the cream of the local boxing talent on display which helps ensure the success of this sporting occasion,” said Masonic group officer Dave Sear.

“The substantial amount of money raised on the evening for good causes is due in no small part to the very generous sponsors and to the willingness of all in attendance to dig deep and support the raffle, auction and other fund-raising events.”

Last year saw Furness’ Elliot Carvill emerge triumphant in a ferocious contest with Carl Nicholson, of Cleator Moor, in the top-of-the-bill contest.

Meanwhile, Barrow boxer Josh Jones showed his pedigree to overcome Moss Side Champs Club’s Alan Shepley.

Around 200 spectators will be watching ringside at an event which has proven incredibly popular ever since its inception, with plenty of money being raised for good causes in this area and beyond.

“Last year saw the money raised from the evening, over the years, pass the £200,000 milestone,” said group chairman Peter Schofield.

“Half of the £10,000 generated in 2018 was distributed to local good causes with the rest being distributed through the Masonic national charity.

“It is one of our principal fund-raising events of the year and I am very grateful to the Masons from all the various lodges in the group whose efforts make it all possible.”
