PETER Date cannot wait to welcome Red Star Belgrade to Millom for the highly-anticipated first-round tie in this year’s Challenge Cup.

The Woolybacks’ chairman is excited by the prospect of playing the Serbian newcomers to the competition on Sunday, January 27, which will add to his own club’s long history in rugby league’s most prestigious knock-out competition.

Date expects the community in the town and surrounding area to show their support on the day too and is looking forward to meeting the Red Star players and club officials.

“We are all really excited ahead of the upcoming Challenge Cup fixture with Red Star Belgrade and welcome the players and officials with open arms to our club at Coronation Field, the oldest amateur rugby league club in the world,” said Date.

“We know the local community will embrace this and offer a warm Millom welcome to our visitors and we would like to welcome all our loyal supporters and sponsors down to this historic day.”

Date echoed the sentiments of Red Star managing director Colin Kleyweg, who is honoured for his club to have drawn Millom.

“We, as a club, are very proud to be playing Red Star in this prestigious competition, and I hope the day is enjoyed by the players, supporters and sponsors alike no matter what the result,” added Date.
