Barrow AFC’s winner against Maidstone United last Saturday came from an error from goalkeeper Ross Worner, who had the sympathies of his new manager Harry Wheeler.

Worner was making his debut for the Stones after signing on loan from fellow National League side Sutton United earlier in the week and, for long periods, he frustrated the Bluebirds at Holker Street.

Jacob Blyth was denied twice in quick succession by the 29-year-old custodian in just the fourth minute before he produced a superb fingertip save to keep out Tyler Smith’s effort right on half-time.

But Worner ultimately cost his side the points in the 62nd minute, when his fumble of Kemy Agustien’s tame shot that was straight at him allowed Smith to pounce and tap in AFC’s winner.

Wheeler said after the game: “He’s had a brilliant game, an excellent game, with some first-class saves and then he’s been punished and he doesn’t deserve that one.

“We probably don’t deserve that one, but at the moment that’s three league losses in a row and everyone is being punished for something they’ve done during a game.

“If it’s an individual error, we’ve changed that personnel-wise and then it’s someone else.

“Today, it was someone who was one of our best players, so it hurts a lot for them and it hurts a lot for us.”
