FURNESS Phantoms have been expanding their reach after holding the team’s first-ever rookie day at Kendal Rugby Club recently.

The Ulverston-based American football club are eager to encourage more players from South Cumbria to join their ranks and this was the first of a series of days aimed at introducing newcomers to the sport’s basics.

In total, 15 potential new players of all abilities were in attendance at the rugby union club’s Mintbridge home to run through a series of drills with current Phantoms players at the two-hour session.

The Phantoms, who play in the British American Football League NFC Two Central competition, have three more rookie days lined up before the end of January.

The next is at Millom Rugby Union Club’s Wilson Park home in Haverigg on Sunday, December 16 at 10.30am.

Furness then hold another in their home town at Ulverston Leisure Centre on Sunday, January 6, starting at 11.50am, and the rookie days conclude with one in Barrow at Furness Academy on January 13 at 10.50am.

All new players are welcome regardless of size, fitness or experience, while the Phantoms would like to recruit more coaches and game-day sideline staff too.
