EVIE Wharton got another opportunity to show off her skills when she took part in a rematch with her opponent from her debut contest.

The Furness Catholic boxer made her bow in the club’s colours on their home show at The Forum just under two weeks ago against Aisha Afzal and was back in action last Friday.

This time, Wharton travelled to Leeds to face Afzal on her club’s home show and Furness coach Paul Ryan was impressed with what he saw from both.

“Wharton and her opponent Aisha Afzal, from Tigers Gym, once again put on a superb display beyond their years and demonstrated attack, defence, head and foot movement to great aplomb,” said Ryan.

Wharton was one of three female boxers competing on Furness’ show, along with fellow debutant Micah Thorne and junior Charlotte Clarke.

And Ryan is proud to see more female boxers coming through the doors of the Dalkeith Street gym.

“No show in the Furness area has ever had as many female boxers competing on it before and the hard work put in at the gym by Micah, Evie and Charlotte pays off when they climb inside the ropes and give it their all,” said Ryan.

“Our current crop of boxers certainly do bring meaning to the ‘This Girl Can’ movement that gets female members of all ages into sport.”
