Barrow AFC could be without defender Brian Wilson for their away game against Braintree Town tomorrow after he was forced off in the midweek draw against Wrexham.

Wilson was unable to retake to the field for the second half of the goalless draw against the Dragons at Holker Street due to a calf problem, something that has already affected him this season.

In order to avoid a repeat of an issue that kept the 35-year-old out for two months, he was replaced by Connor Brown, who slotted in seamlessly to the back three, despite predominantly being a right-back.

Barrow manager Ian Evatt said: “He just had a bit of a tight calf. It was getting worse and worse and we decided to take him off and not take the risk of potentially losing him for a couple of months again.

“It’s not ideal, it’s not ideal at all, but the lads who’ve come in for us have done very well defensively. We kept a good structure, we looked balanced, we defended our box really well.

“The midfield lads worked their socks off – Jason Taylor, John Rooney – and Kemy [Agustien] obviously needs to be fitter, but he’s getting there.”

Evatt will have another centre-back to choose from at Braintree, who are bottom of the National League, with Dan Jones available again after missing the Wrexham match through suspension.

Once again, the AFC boss will have some tough decisions to make as to who to leave out for the trip to Cressing Road.

Evatt said: “More or less everyone is OK. I hope Brian recovers and that we got him off in time before it became a bad injury.

“Josh Granite’s toe is still very sore and we’re having to manage that one, but Rhys Turner is fine again, Matty Elsdon is fine again.

“Steven Jennings missed Tuesday’s game through family problems, but he’ll be back for Saturday, so it’s looking positive.

“It’s important if you’ve got a shirt at the moment, you play well and keep it because there are players knocking on the door, waiting to take their chance.”
