Fit-again Barrow AFC striker Jacob Blyth is confident the goals will soon start to come once he has built up more match sharpness.

Blyth has had a stop-start beginning to life at Holker Street since signing in the summer, with a dislocated shoulder in pre-season being followed by a further injury setback in October that kept him out for a month.

This followed a season out of the game after his release from Scottish club Motherwell in August 2017, where he recovered from a range of issues.

The 26-year-old was finally able to make his first start for the Bluebirds in last Saturday’s victory at Aldershot Town and he was able to play 90 minutes again during the 0-0 draw with Wrexham on Tuesday night.

During which, Blyth had a couple of chances to break the deadlock, with him heading Rhys Norrington-Davies’ cross straight at the goalkeeper before just being unable to reach Jack Hindle’s cut-back.

Blyth said: “I was just saying in the changing room to the lads that after a few more games, when I’ll get a bit more match sharpness, I’ll be getting on the end of all these crosses.

“I’ve had two 90 minutes in the space of three or four days after 19 months out and I’m feeling it now, but I’m just delighted to be back out there.

“I always believed I could get through it – it’s mainly mentally more than physically and I’ve been pleased with my comeback and I feel like I’ll get a lot fitter and sharper in the next few games.”

Blyth’s return has coincided with Barrow manager Ian Evatt changing his formation, with AFC now fielding three centre backs and having another striker alongside top scorer Tyler Smith.

It’s a change that’s had an immediate effect on their performances and results, as they’ve managed to pick up four points from their last two games and consign a worrying run of six straight defeats, in all competitions, to the past.

The display against high-flying Wrexham felt like another step in the right direction, with Blyth saying: “It was brilliant. After the run we’ve been on, we’ve changed a few things with the shape and stuff.

“If you’d said after that run we’d been on, that we’d take four points from the next two games, with two clean sheets, you’d take it all day.

“A famous saying in football is keep a clean sheet and you’ll go and win the game. Thankfully, we did that on Saturday and I thought we were solid again tonight.

“Everyone is really happy at the minute, there’s a good atmosphere around the place and roll on Saturday [against Braintree].”
