MATTY While has become the second player to leave Barrow Raiders for West Cumbria during the off-season after agreeing a deal with Whitehaven.

The former Leeds Rhinos youth-team player has agreed a two-year deal with the club he had a short loan spell with at the start of the 2018 season.

While follows Ryan Fieldhouse, who has signed for Workington Town, up the coast for the 2019 Betfred League One campaign and Haven coach Gary Charlton has high expectations of the 22-year-old.

“He probably didn’t get the game time he wanted at Barrow last season to show what he can do so, hopefully, it will be to our gain,” said Charlton.

“He comes from a Super League background, having been in the Leeds Rhinos set up for a few years. The ball is in Matty’s court now so, hopefully, he can come and cement a place in our line-up. He definitely has the ability to do well for us.”

While made 11 appearances for hometown club Barrow along with scoring one try, which came away to Dewsbury Rams last season.

“I’m proud and excited to have signed for Whitehaven,” said While. “I’m looking forward to the year ahead as well as the opportunity to work with Charlo, Jonty and Macca and can’t wait to get started with the lads.”
