St George’s C of E school in Barrow have taken part in a day dedicated to showing the life of a reporter.

The children of St George’s attended Barrow AFC to take part in a set of different activities to see the different sides of reporting and commentating.

The children were tasked with taking part in three different roles as players, commentators and reporters.

Hannah Gatt, one of the teachers involved with organising the event said: “We wanted to get the kids out of the classroom and show them what it’s like reporting in the real world.

“We started off by looking at a match report of a Barrow game to get an idea what we’d be writing up.

“We then went on to looking at the interviews with the players and managers to get their reactions to the game.

“After that we looked at commentating the game, to see how the live reporting worked.

“Before we headed down to the club we practised all these skills in the classroom to make sure all the kids knew what to expect.

“So then when we went down we split into three groups to cover the three different skill sets we’d learned.

“So one group played a game of football, the second group commentated on the match, and the last group interviewed the players and wrote up a match report for the game.

“We’ve had a great week and the children have really enjoyed taking their learning from inside the classroom and applying it to a real life situation.”

Whilst at Barrow AFC the children were treated to talks from commentators and players to help better their understanding of what goes on during and after the match.

A sports reporter from The Mail will be treating the students of St George’s to a visit in the future to showcase what it’s like working day to day as a sports reporter.

The junior reporters scheme will be becoming an ongoing section for The Mail as we try to encourage more and more young people into the world of reporting and journalism.

Any schools wanting to contribute to junior reporters can contact The Mail via email, phone, or by social media with their own stories students being introduced to journalism.
