BARROW Raiders' hopes of re-signing Arnaud Bartes have been dealt a blow after the prop was called into Catalans Dragons' squad for pre-season training.

The 28-year-old made a big impression after joining the Raiders on loan from the Catalans' reserve team, Saint-Esteve Catalan XIII, in July along with fellow forward Saloty Mendy and winger Georgy Gambaro.

Raiders head coach Paul Crarey had hoped Bartes might be able to return to Craven Park for the whole of the 2019 Betfred Championship season, providing he could make personal arrangements back in France.

But it was clearly not just here where he made an impression, with Catalans head coach Steve McNamara giving the hard-charging, tough tackling forward an opportunity to earn a permanent place in the Challenge Cup winners' Super League squad.

“Arnaud Bartes is an absolute warrior and he’s turned out to be a fans’ favourite,” said Crarey, when asked last month about the prospect of the Frenchman staying on for longer.

“I think we’re going to speak to Arnaud and we’d like him to come back, but he’s got a girlfriend at home and a business, but he’s enjoyed the experience with us.”

In total, Bartes made nine appearances for the Raiders and scored one try, which came in the 34-18 win at home to Swinton Lions during the Championship Shield Super Eights.
