Right-back Connor Brown is adamant he doesn’t want to go through the sort of disappointment Barrow AFC suffered during last Saturday’s 3-0 defeat against Eastleigh again.

The Spitfires extended the Bluebirds’ losing run to six games, with them effectively having three points in the bag with just three minutes of the second half played at Holker Street.

It was hoped that the two-week break AFC had from competitive action prior to the game would bring a fresh start and a return to form, but the feeling at the final whistle was very much one of ‘back to square one.’

Brown said: “It had been a very good week going into the game, but it just got to the last moment and it didn’t spark.

“The goals we conceded were rubbish, nothing went for us and it was just one of those days that you don’t want to have again.

“It was one of them where we started really well then we just got sucker-punched and everything goes wrong from there.

“We all need to grow up as a group and get into of the habit of thinking, when we do go a goal down, that the team can still win.

“When we go 1-0 down, we need to just regroup together and try and put it right.”

All three of the goals Barrow conceded in the match could be classed as avoidable, with Paul McCallum somehow ending up goal-side from his team’s goal kick before scoring the opener.

The second came from that old Achilles’ heel of Ian Evatt’s side – defending set-pieces – while McCallum virtually had the freedom of the penalty area to head in the third and put the game beyond the hosts.

Brown said: “We need to learn from the goals we’re conceding because they’re not scoring worldies, we’re just giving them chances, really.

“They’re not having to work hard to score and we’re just gifting teams goals, while we’ve had one ‘gifted’ goal all season, up at Chorley. Other than that, we’re having to do something special to get one.

“We’ve got a full squad now, though, so there’s competition for places and everyone is fighting for the shirt, meaning if you don’t perform then you’re out of the team and possibly out the team for a while.

“We’ve got a few strikers back and hopefully they can start scoring goals for us because we need it at the moment, as the defence is a bit down in the dumps, confidence-wise.”
