Barrow AFC have announced the signing of former Swansea City midfielder Kemy Agustien on a short-term contract until January, after a successful trial.

The 32-year-old, who is a Curacao international with 13 caps, featured for the Bluebirds in last Friday’s friendly against the club’s under-21s team at Holker Street, as a trialist.

He impressed manager Ian Evatt by scoring a stunning strike in the second half of what ended up being an emphatic 7-0 victory for the first team.

Agustien arrives at AFC with plenty of pedigree, having played for the Netherlands at youth level and brings Premier League experience from his time at Swansea. He had most recently been on the books at Nuneaton Borough.

Agustien, who was born in the Netherlands Antilles, began his career in Willem II’s academy before graduating into the club’s first-team, for whom he played over 50 times, making appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie and UEFA Cup.

He was then signed by Louis van Gaal for AZ Alkmaar, where he made 25 appearances, but he found himself on the fringes and was sent out on loan several times, which included a spell at Birmingham City.

He moved to Swansea in 2010 and was on loan at Crystal Palace at the time his parent club won promotion to the Premier League at the end of his first season with them.

Agustien returned to the Liberty Stadium, however, to make his top flight debut against Manchester City in August 2011 before eventually moving on to Brighton in 2013, where he struggled with injuries.

From there, he has had spells playing in Denmark, Scotland and back in Holland before his brief spell at Nuneaton earlier this year.

Meanwhile, winger Erico Sousa has had his loan at Barrow from Accrington Stanley extended by another month.

The 23-year-old has played in five matches for the Bluebirds so far and marked his debut with a spectacular long-range strike against Bromley.

This loan extension means he is eligible for the National League fixtures against Eastleigh, Aldershot Town, Wrexham, Braintree Town and Maidstone United.
